今回お話を伺ったのはルーマニア出身で国際文化学研究科・大学院生のTUDORICA IOAYA CILIANAさん。神戸大学でのキャンパスライフや、ルーマニアの魅力、日本文化のなかで特にお気に入りだという書道について語っていただきました。また今回は留学生の方ということがあり英語と日本語でインタビューを掲載しています。
I interviewed Tudorica Ioaya Ciliana, a Romanian international student studying at the Graduate School of Intercultural Studies. She talked about the campus life at Kobe University, the charm of Romania and her favorite aspect of Japanese culture: calligraphy. This interview is available in both English and Japanese versions.
――—神戸大学に留学を決めた理由を教えてください。
――—Please tell me why you decided on studying abroad at Kobe University.
元々日本に留学をすることは決めていました。ヨーロッパではエラスムスという留学制度があり、論文や面接などの条件をクリアすればEUからお金を借りて留学することができます。エラスムスに加盟している日本の大学が神戸大学だけだったので神戸大学に留学することを決めました。
I had decided from the very beginning that I wanted to go to Japan. In Europe there is a scholarship called Erasmus+ and you can study abroad if you pass the admission conditions, such as writing a letter of intent and undergoing an interview. Kobe University was our only Erasmus+ partner university in Japan so I decided to study here.
――—専門分野を教えてください。
――—Please tell me your field of specialization.
専門分野は『日本の広告はどのように人々を魅了しているか』ということです。特にコカ・コーラのような炭酸飲料である「ドクターペッパー」の広告について調べていて、マスターの最終論文はそれを題材として書くつもりです。神戸大学ではたくさんの授業を受けましたが、一番面白い授業は『日本の文化や産業』についての授業でした。
My major is Public Relations and Advertising and I am researching the effects that Japanese advertising has on people. More specifically, I am planning on writing my graduation thesis about the advertising of Dr. Pepper, a soft drink similar to Coca-Cola. I took many classes in Kobe University, but one of the most interesting classes for me was ‘Japanese Cultural Industry’.
――—日本の好きな所はどのようなところでしょうか。
――—What aspects of Japan do you like?
日本にきて一番驚いたのが、温かい飲み物が多くの場所でボトルで売っているところです。ルーマニアは日本よりかなり気温が低く、雪もかなり降りますが、紙コップに入ったものしか売っていません。また、コンビニで電気などの公共料金の支払いや荷物の受け取りまでできるのは、すごく便利でいいと思います。
When I arrived in Japan what surprised me the most is that warm drinks are sold in bottles in many places. In Romania, even though the temperature is lower than in Japan and it snows quite a lot, warm drinks are sold only in cups. Moreover, I think it’s very useful and good that you can pay utility charges and even send packages in convenience stores.
ハロウィンには心斎橋を訪れました。ルーマニアにはあまりコスプレをする文化がないので、たくさんの人の工夫したコスプレに驚きましたが、とても楽しかったです。また、京都の寺院も訪れました。帰国までに広島にも行ってみたいと思っています。
On Halloween I visited Shinsaibashi. Because in Romania cosplay is not yet very popular, I was a bit surprised by people’s various costumes, but it was very fun. I have also visited temples in Kyoto. Before I go back home, I would like to visit Hiroshima.
――—ルーマニアの魅力について教えてください。
――—Please tell me about Romania’s appeal.
ルーマニアには教会や城が多いです。世界中で吸血鬼として知られているドラキュラのモデルとなった人物が、実はルーマニア出身なんですよ。ヴラド・ツェペシュという人で、15世紀に国王としてオスマン・トルコ軍と戦い、ルーマニアでは英雄として崇められています。その人物の城であるブラン城にぜひ訪れてみてほしいです。主な食べ物としてはサルマーレというキャベツロールのようなものがあります。中にご飯が入っていてとてもおいしいですよ。ほかにもイタリアが近いということもあり、ピザも好んで食べます。
There are many monasteries and castles in Romania. The person who was the model for the well-known vampire Dracula is actually Romanian. His name was Vlad Tepes and he was a king in the 15th century. Because he fought against the Ottoman Empire and the Turkish armies, he is known as a hero in Romania. Please visit Castle Bran, the castle of Vlad Tepes!
One of the most famous Romanian foods is the cabbage roll called ‘sarmale’. It is very delicious and it contains rice as well. In addition, because Italy is so close, we also love eating pizza.
――—日本の文化の中で書道がお気に入りと聞きましたが、理由などを教えてください
――—I hear that you like Japanese calligraphy – could you tell me why?
今回、六甲祭で書道研究会の演技を見させてもらってとても感動しました。私が書道を知ったきっかけは大学の先生です。『生死』という文字を見て、字の持つイメージを感じ、あまりの美しさに驚いたのを今でも覚えています。また一つ一つの文字にたくさんの意味がこめられているのも魅力だと思います。ルーマニアでは書道があまり知られておらず、道具も手に入りにくいのが残念です。
I was deeply moved by the performance of the calligraphy club at Rokko Festival. My university teacher in Romania offered me the opportunity of learning about calligraphy. I can still remember how surprised I was when I first saw the word ‘life and death’. I was taken aback by the beauty of the moment when I could truly feel the image contained within the letters. Moreover, I think it is fascinating how many meanings can be incorporated into the same kanji. It is unfortunate that calligraphy is not that popular in Romania and it is difficult to obtain the necessary tools for calligraphy there.
――—これから留学を考える人へアドバイスをお願いします
――—Please give some advice for people thinking about studying abroad.
まずは行きたい国のことについて調べたり、言語を学習してみてください。神戸大学には日本でもトップクラスの手厚い留学制度があり、私もチューターには生活や授業のことなど何回も相談に行きました。私はこの留学をするまでルーマニアを出たことがありませんでした。日本にきて色々な人々と話し、色々な経験をして成長できたので、留学を考えている人はぜひ時間のある学生のうちに挑戦して欲しいです。
Firstly, do some research about the country where you want to study and try to practice the country’s language. Kobe University has a top-class system for studying abroad in Japan and I could ask tutors for advice regarding the lifestyle or classes at Kobe University. Before coming here as an exchange student, I had never left Romania. After coming to Japan I have had the opportunity of talking to so many people and I have had various experiences which helped me grow, so if you have time and you are thinking of studying abroad, please do so!

書道がとても好きということでしたが、僕達よりも数多くのエピソードを知っていて驚きました。Ciliさんはすごく気さくな方でインタビュー中話が弾み、取材する側としてすごく楽しめました。
She seems to like calligraphy very much, and I was surprised that she knows more episodes about it than me. Ms. Cili was very easy to talk to, so during the interview we had a lively and openhearted conversation, and it was great for me as the reporter.
